Roodeberg has been a part of South Africa's wine heritage since 1949.
Roodeberg didn't happen overnight, but evolved from a succession of blends. At one stage there were two blends, named Roodeberg No 1 and Roodeberg No 2, one light bodied and one full bodied. "So we decided to develop a light No 1 around cabernet and to call it, yes indeed, KWV Cabernet Sauvignon, while the name Roodeberg was retained for the full bodied No 2. That was a good decision, if I may say so" said the man credited with developing the blend, Dr Charles Niehaus, a pioneer of KWV's Winemaking heritage. In the 1940's he was asked to produce a red blend to complement KWV's portfolio of wines and sherry.
People speculated about the origin of the wine's name for many years. When Dr Niehaus was tasked with finding a name for his red blend, he looked to the Paarl Valley for inspiration and coined the name Roodeberg.
Roodeberg is a wine that has stood the test of time. It maintains its legendary heritage and style, but is also continually evolving with the modern lifestyles of its global enthusiast.
