KWV CEMENTS POSITION AS LEADING WINE PRODUCER WITH 110 MEDALS

Cape Town, 12 July, 2016 – KWV has further cemented its position as a leading international wine producer, winning an impressive 110 wine awards at both international and local competitions over the past month. These include 7 trophies, 4 double gold, 26 gold, 39 silver, and 34 bronze medals.

At the annual Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) the world’s largest wine competition judged by top wine experts from around the world, KWV garnered 5 gold medals for its Cathedral Cellar, Laborie, and KWV The Mentors wines, and 11 silver, and 6 bronze medals.  

KWV also achieved an outstanding result At the 23rd Concours Mondial de Bruxelles held in Spain last month, winning 3 golds for its KWV Cathedral Cellar and KWV The Mentors wines, and 13 silvers and 6 bronze. 

At Tranche 2 of the International Wine Challenge (IWC), KWV garnered 5 silver and 6 bronze medals. KWV also walked away with the Best Value Trophy at the Vinordic Wine Challenge in Sweden.

Other noteworthy international wins include 1 Trophy, 3 Double Gold, 13 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 bronze at the China Wine & Spirits Awards and an impressive showing at the Sakura Japan Women’s Wine Awards, where KWV took 1 double gold, three golds and 1 silver. 

Locally, at the recent Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show, KWV walked away with four trophies for its KWV 1948 Heritage Limited Release Tawny, KWV Cathedral Cellar wine, KWV Classic Tawny and KWV The Mentors Chardonnay labels as well as 6 silver and 14 bronze medals.

KWV also won 2 gold & best in class, and 1 silver and trophy runner up at the Cape Port Association’s CAPPA Port Challenge for its KWV Heritage 1961 Limited Release Tawny, KWV Classic Tawny and Ruby. At the inaugural Cabernet Franc Challenge in May, KWV won a Top 6 award for its 2012 and 2013 KWV The Mentors Cabernet Franc wines. 

KWV also performed impressively at the SAA on Board Listing Awards, winning Best Performance Chief Executive Officer Award, Port of the year and 5 Premium Class Awards.

Achieving two Top 12 awards at the SA Shiraz Challenge was also a recent highlight. “KWV is proud of our diversified accolades received in the last month,” says De Bruyn Steenkamp, Global Sales & Marketing Director for KWV. “This cements our position as a highly awarded wine producer in South Africa and abroad.” 

He adds that KWV’s objective when entering competitions is for global benchmarking so to be recognised with trophies & gold awards is a real highlight.

Steenkamp says that these awards are also important for KWV as a business, especially in parts of the world where KWV is placing a big sales focus. 

He continues: “KWV has focused on our core wine brands in order to premiumise our wine portfolio in China and Japan. We have put focus behind locally recognised competitions, and in Japan this has translated into improved brand awareness and increased PR; as an example we have secured accolades at the Sakura Womens Wine Awards.”
